About the Department

The Women Development and Child Welfare (WDCW) Department of Telangana is dedicated to the holistic development and welfare of women and children in the state. It is one of the few states with a separate department for this crucial mandate, distinguishing it from many others where these functions are integrated within the Social Welfare Department.

Key Initiatives and Programs

  • Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS): The department implements the world's largest and most unique outreach program, ICDS. This program provides a comprehensive package of services including supplementary nutrition, immunization, health check-ups, referral services, and pre-school non-formal education.
  • Anganwadi Centers: There are 35,781 Anganwadi Centers functioning across the state, organized under 149 ICDS Projects. These centers are vital for delivering services at the grassroots level.
  • Child Protection: The department is actively involved in child protection measures, including the selection and functioning of Child Welfare Committees (CWCs) and Juvenile Justice Boards (JJBs).
  • Women Empowerment: The department also focuses on various protective, welfare, and empowerment measures for women.

Departmental Activities

The multifarious activities of the Department are broadly classified into three categories:

  1. Implementation of the ICDS Programme, which has been universalized throughout the State with 149 Projects.
  2. Management of Institutions for the Welfare of Women and Children in need of Care and Protection.
  3. Implementation and Monitoring of various Protective/Welfare and Empowerment measures relating to Women and Children.

Challenges and Goals

While the implementation of ICDS has resulted in improvements in the nutritional status of women and children, challenges remain. The department continues to work towards reducing the percentage of low birth weight babies, underweight children (under 3 years), and anaemic pregnant women, with the ultimate goal of reducing Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR).
