Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY: A Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme

The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) is a flagship scheme launched by the Government of India in September 2018. It aims to provide significant financial protection to vulnerable Indian families by offering cashless hospitalisation coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year. This scheme is considered the world's largest government-funded health insurance initiative, extending its benefits to over 55 crore individuals from the bottom 40% of India's population, as identified by the SECC 2011 database.

Key Benefits

  • ₹5 Lakh Annual Health Cover: Eligible families receive ₹5 lakh per year for cashless hospitalisation.
  • Extensive Coverage: The scheme covers 1,949 medical procedures, including surgeries, chemotherapy, kidney dialysis, neonatal care, and mental health treatment, at no cost to the beneficiary.
  • Nationwide Access: Beneficiaries can avail treatment in any of the over 30,000 empanelled government and private hospitals across all states and union territories.
  • Cashless Treatment: Treatment is completely cashless, facilitated by the Ayushman Card.
  • Senior Citizen Top-up: Senior citizens aged 70 years and above receive an additional ₹5 lakh top-up cover.
  • High Utilization: As of 2026, over 8 crore hospitalisation cases have been covered under PM-JAY.

Eligibility for Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY is primarily determined by inclusion in the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011 database. Specific criteria include:

  • Urban Households: Individuals belonging to one of the 11 specified occupational categories, including rag-pickers, domestic workers, street vendors, and construction workers.
  • Senior Citizens (70+ Years): All senior citizens aged 70 years and above are eligible, irrespective of their income or SECC status.

Required Documents

  • Aadhaar Card (mandatory for e-KYC verification)
  • Ration Card / Family document showing members
