Waterlogging and soil salinity have become serious challenges for agricultural productivity in many parts of India, especially in Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan. To address this issue and improve farmers’ income, the government is implementing the Water Logged and Saline Land Reclamation Project. Under this scheme, affected land is reclaimed and restored for productive agricultural use.
Objective of the Scheme
The primary objective of this project is to reclaim waterlogged and saline land and enhance agricultural productivity.
Key Objectives
- Construction of Sub-Surface and Vertical Drainage Systems.
- Farmers’ participation in land reclamation activities.
- Environment-friendly disposal of saline water.
- Preservation of the productivity of reclaimed land.
Key Highlights of the Scheme
According to groundwater survey data, approximately 982,740 acres of land are affected by waterlogging and salinity, out of which around 174,470 acres are severely affected. To address this issue, the government has launched a large-scale land reclamation program.
Land Reclamation Techniques
The following techniques are used under the scheme:
| Technique | Description |
|---|---|
| Sub Surface Drainage System | Used in areas where groundwater is highly saline |
| Vertical Drainage System | Installation of shallow tubewells where groundwater is less saline |
| Integrated Bio-Drainage System | Plantation of trees and salt-resistant species |
| Fish Farming | Additional income source in waterlogged areas |
