Rajasthan Introduces Common Eligibility Test (CET) for 10th Pass Government Jobs

In a significant move for job seekers in Rajasthan, the government has decided to make the Common Eligibility Test (CET) mandatory for all government recruitments requiring a 10th-grade pass. This decision aims to streamline the application process and reduce the overwhelming number of applications received for these positions.

Why the Shift to CET for 10th Pass?

Historically, government vacancies for roles like Lab Attendant or Fourth Grade employees have attracted lakhs of applications. For instance, a recruitment drive for just 52 Lab Attendant posts saw an astonishing 2 lakh applications, while a Fourth Grade recruitment received a staggering 24 lakh applications. This sheer volume makes the selection process cumbersome and challenging for the recruitment boards.

The introduction of CET at the secondary level (10th grade) is expected to create a two-tiered examination system. The first tier, the CET, will act as a screening mechanism, filtering out a large number of candidates. This will significantly reduce the competition in the subsequent, more specific recruitment examinations, making the entire process more manageable and efficient.

How Will CET Work?

The proposed CET for 10th pass jobs will be conducted in two phases. The initial phase will be the CET itself, designed to assess a broad range of abilities. Candidates who clear this first stage will then be eligible for the second phase, which will be the actual recruitment examination for specific posts. This multi-stage approach is similar to systems already in place in several other states.

States Adopting CET Model

Rajasthan is not alone in adopting this approach. States like Haryana have already implemented a similar Common Eligibility Test for secondary level recruitments. This model has proven effective in managing large applicant pools and ensuring a more focused selection process.

Potential Vacancies Under the New CET

With the implementation of the 10th-level CET, several popular government job categories are expected to be brought under its purview. These include positions like Forest Guard, Excise Constable, Lab Attendant, and various Fourth Grade employee roles. The Rajasthan government has sent a proposal to the recruitment board, suggesting that 8-10 different recruitments could be covered under this new CET.

Benefits of the Two-Tier Examination System

The primary benefit of this system is the reduction in the number of applicants for each individual recruitment. This makes the monitoring and evaluation process much easier for the authorities. Furthermore, it ensures that candidates who appear for the final recruitment exams are genuinely interested and qualified, having already cleared a preliminary eligibility test.
